Our service is focused on developing young minds and creating a safe and positive environment for our students to nurture the talent we all know every single one of our students has. Our impact varies from subtlest of differences in behavior, to having a student read a passage and say “wow, reading is fun,” to increasing a student’s reading level from a B in third grade to on-level in seven months. Our kids are making incredible strides every day and we are lucky to be a part of their growth. However, the “growth” goes beyond just the students we are serving. We as corps members are also developing as young professionals and gaining irreplaceable experience as growing individuals.
While we invest hours and hours to our students, City Year invests hours and hours of its time and resources to its corps members. They provide us with multiple strategies to tutor the kids we serve as well as the space to give each other honest feedback so we can learn from our peers and better our impact, communication skills and work ethic.
The Parker-Varney team, (Andy, Jon, Hope, Dan, Terri, Abby, Grace and Neal), has helped me grow as a person and helped me understand that growth works both ways. Our students will grow, but so will we.
