Global Youth Service Day at Beech Street Elementary School

We live to serve another day and that is indeed a beautiful thing! It’s Yulissa Hidalgo again and last week, City Year New Hampshire participated in Global Youth Service Day, a worldwide movement to engage youth in service.

At Beech Street Elementary, we had four major projects: four murals with quotes, a US map, ceiling tiles with flags and school rules, and mulching around the school. It was a very productive day and I feel extremely proud to have witnessed the empowerment that service provided our kids. The moment which resonates with me the most was when a third grade student said: “we’re only doing one station? I wanted to do them all!”

This enthusiasm and passion moved me because that is exactly why I joined city year. I joined for kids to sincerely enjoy service and all forms of arts.

The end of the year is quickly approaching and the amount of growth that our kids have undergone with the help of our teachers, staff, parents, and City Year corps members gives me a triumphant feeling that is comforting and bittersweet.  All of our hard work was reflected through their smiles and excitement for next year’s GYSD.  It was not easy, but this line of work and opportunity to serve truly provides happiness to all.

  1. It’s a wonderful thing to get kids engaged in community service – and taking pride in their surroundings, but also themselves. Kudos to City Year New Hampshire for recognizing GYSD and introducing our youth to it!
