To steal a line from one of my favorite Beatles’ songs “In the end the love you take is equal to the love you make”. These words really resonate with me because what you put in is what you will get out. No more, no less – the effort and responsibility of making your experience lies solely on your shoulders.
This is the one aspect of City Year that I appreciate the most. Reflecting on how fast the time has flown since arriving in Manchester in August to being ready to go on winter break now in mid-December is a wild thought. Where did the time go?
During this time I have had the opportunity to participate in a classroom where my students constantly keep me on my feet. I am constantly inspired by their thoughtfulness, creativity and their love of life. I have also been able to develop as a leader outside of City Year, the opportunity to sit and reflect on ones’ service, relationships with others and effective ways to manage conflict and speak in a way that is thoughtful and considerate are all invaluable skills that I am glad the organization takes time to focus on developing within its corps and members.
As break looms on the horizon I know it is very easy to get so wrapped up and lost in nostalgic day-dreams and dreams of home, sleep, good friends and family that you forget sight of why you’re here. Knowing this it is my goal to make my final day count. I am so grateful for my opportunity and so proud with all I have put in. I feel that I am in a much better place than when I came here in August. I am proud to say that I can stand on my own two feet within City Year and know that my heart is in this for the right reasons. Now while I may not be the most enthusiastic, I can proudly say that I am fired up and after a quick recharge of the batteries I will be Ready to G0!
