Opening Day!

Although I’ve attended several training sessions and recruitment events within the last few weeks, my main joy came from our Opening Day Ceremony.  The ceremony took place inside Manchester City Hall, on Thursday, September 30th.  Many people came to support the work that we do—City Year staff and alumni, friends, family members and youth that we have worked with in the past.  The ceremony opened with words from our co-executive directors, followed by several of our sponsors and supporters.  It was great to connect names with faces in the crowd and hear the voices of people who help to make our service possible.

My favorite part of Opening Day was when my fellow corps members and I read our “I Serve Statements.”  Each team approached the microphone with confidence, honesty and passion.  Listening to their “I Serve Statements” was inspirational, and gave me hope in the positive changes that we will make throughout Manchester and the state of New Hampshire.  I serve because I want to live a life of purpose and bring joy to the people around me.  I serve because I want to do my part to make the world a better place.  I serve because I can.

After the ceremony, many of our supporters attended our Office Grand Opening.  This was a fun opportunity to converse with community members and show them our new space.  I am proud to be a part of this organization, and I cannot put into words how much this year of service means to me.  I am extremely thankful to the people to helped make our Opening Day Ceremony a success and I know that together we will continue to keep students in school and on track.
